Assassin’s Creed Heading for WWII?

Thought that the gaming industry’s love affair with Word War II was finally on the wane?  Think again, because according to C&VG, Ubisoft have been tossing around the idea of setting Assassin’s Creed 3 in WWII.  Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood Producer, Vincent Pontbriand had this to say:

“We have a couple of options [for AC3]. So far we’ve tried to take eras that had very important things happen in them that are known worldwide. So WW2 for example – we could have an Assassin’s there. It would work.

Previously, Producer Sébastien Puel had mentioned the possibility in discussing a female protagonist:

“We don’t want to just decide we want to change and have a female hero as the first inspiration is always the time period, but if you’re talking about, say, World War II the economies in England and France were run by women because the men were off fighting.  So maybe in this context you were a woman in England during WWII. Why not? Nothing prevents us from doing it.”

As interesting as both ideas are, the WW2 setting is one we’ve visited many times in the past and we’re not sure how appealing an arena it would make for an AC game, though Saboteur did a good job last year of creating an engaging atmosphere, so we’ll have to wait and see.  Here at GLHQ though, we’d rather see a setting with more potential for historical grandeur…Assassin’s Creed: Battle for Blizzcon?  Maybe not.  More sensible, popular suggestions thus far have been Mayan or Inca civilisations, Macedonia at the time of Alexander the Great, Tudor or Elizabethan England, and more.  That’s our take, what do you fancy?

I quite like the idea of it being set around the 18th century… lots kicking off all over the world during that time, including the Napoleonic wars, the American independence, various trading wars. Endless scope for possibilities without resorting to yet another bloody WWII game.

Hell, I’d settle for the first world war, that’d be a relative novelty too.

Victorian England would have been nice, World War 2? What are they thinking!

Set it in Paisley, 2010… that’d be a short game.

I can’t see it being set before the events in Renaissance Italy, so that’s quite a few of those suggestions out of the window for me.

Victorian London would be enticing. Perhaps they could weave Jack The Ripper in somehow.

I think WWII is a very nice suggestion, but I’m not sure where exactly it would be best set.

I’m backing Victorian London, or failing that, Elizabeathan. I mean, come on – The British Empire in one form or another is the next big thing in the timeline, amiright?

I love the idea of a WW2 AC game, but an assassin in the time Alexander the Great would’ve been even more awesome!
