It's better than 2, which was such a con... It was BTTF 1.5 -_-
I just thought 3 was shite. The only reason they made 2 and 3 was to cash in on the first but at least 2 tied in better with the first. 3 basically just went "hey, we're in the wild west now because cowboys are cool!" for no real reason.

As I recall, BTTF 1 ends with the opening to BTTF 2 and the same happens at the end of BTTF 2 for 3. I'd say from that that it was always planned to be a trilogy rather than them just cashing in. Plus there's a pretty good explanation for them being in the West too. :/
