Default Would you like to phone a friend? - Gaming Help

Ok, so I had an idea for a thread that's specifically for helping fellow gamers out with gaming related problems seeing as we have a wide area of expertise between everyone here.

The idea is that people can post up an issue and anyone else can jump in with an answer. I'll keep this up to date by making sure any questions asked will be put up in this post (with a link to an answer when given) to save people having to wade through to find what they want. Maybe if this gets enough responses, the lovely mods will make this sticky

    What this thread's for;
    • Hardware issues
    • Installation problems
    • In game help/hints

    What it's not for:
    • Dating advise
    • Pet training
    • Next weeks winning lottery number
    • Men's health issues
    • Anything non-gaming related really

I'd like some advice about my dog. He says he knows the winning lottery number but won't tell me because I smell of dandruff herpes. I'd like to ask him out on a date.

    McHee.

    Ok.

I'm about to embark on my first Mass Effect 2 playthrough. What class do people recommend for my first run-through? I played through the first one as a soldier, and never once used any of the mincing force powers because, frankly, I'm not the kid from Captain Planet with the Wind ring. But I'm open minded.

Will not being a soldier make things a trifle difficult on the Insanity playthrough?

Infiltrator is a very nice class for Mass Effect 2. The sniping mechanic in combat is greatly improved, so where you aim for in the scope is actually where the bullet goes regardless of your character level now. You can cloak for short moments to dodge to new cover, which is almost vital for some of the boss fights. They have the best technical skills after the Engineer too, so you don't need to dedicate a squad slot to carrying a techie with you all the time, and they're much better in a fight than being an Engineer yourself. I played the first game as an Engineer, and found it was much smoother in the sequel as the Infiltrator, hanging back sniping enemies and sneaking about hacking into stuff whilst your squad distract the bad guys. They're also much more versatile than the Soldier class. I figured I would need a Soldier for my second playthrough on the hardest difficulty, but the Soldier tactic of taking hits whilst wielding a big gun gets you killed when the AI is considerably smarter than normal, so Infiltrator is actually the better choice because of the range of tactics available due to their stealth, distance killing, hacking and explosives abilities.

Oh, Infiltrators can also fire more, for longer, because they get some pretty big cooldown bonuses on sniper rifles and pistols.

Plus, "Infiltrator" sounds bad-ass in itself.

Just going back to the first Mass Effect, Time for a n00b question here but I didnt find the answer in the manual so I'm gonna ask here. I recently brought it on the PC and I'm currently playing it through as a Soldier, however because Shepherd's tech skills are pants I cant seem to salvage debris when I land on planets as it says my tech skills are too low. If I take a team mate with higher tech skills will this allow me to salvage the debris? Currently I've been sticking with team mates with high combat/biotic strength as I dont see tech skills being particularly useful in a fight. However this may change that rule.

I'm not 100% certain but I am about 89.3% sure that your team mates' level will have an effect on any passive abilitys such as decripting and salvaging. So a character with high tech abilities would help if your Shepard doesn't have them. Of course, it all depends on what atributes you level up on specific team members too

I can come in with a slightly more definite answer and say "yes, it does." It does in Mass Effect 2, also. Mass Effect looks at the combined attributes of your entire team for hacking and salvaging. In one or two places, where there's something particularly tasty to be gotten from salvaging, even if you're playing an engineer with maxed technical skill points it won't be enough to make the attempt, forcing you to also use a technically adept team mate. It's also possible to play as a soldier, with virtually no technical ability, and offset that by taking one or two high-level technicians with you, and still salvage stuff or hack into locked rooms and safes.
