Default Acoustic Gaming: A board game thread

I was looking through the forum and noticed there isn't a board games thread.

So, does anybody else on here play board games?

I play loads of board games, but ironically I tend to play them on PC against AI because I has no mates round here anymore, innit.

Monopoly and Game of Life are always awesome, and I used to play chess at tournament level, so those are all definite favourites. If you want to include card based games, Magic: The Gathering gets much love too.

I'm kind of in the same boat. Board games are something I've got into over the past 18 months. My wife will play with me as long as the games don't have a sci-fi or fantasy theme. All my mates turn their noses up. A shame as my wife was the same but was converted after one game of Carcassonne. I really ought to find myself a game group or something...

Any online ones you'd care to recommend, chief?

Scrabble is pretty good online. Actually, Scrabble is pretty good generally, not sure how I forgot that when I was writing my first post. I have the 2007 PC edition of the game myself. Unfortunately my edition of Monopoly doesn't do online play, I had an older version on Windows 98 that did, but it won't work on Win7 no matter what I try and for some bizarre reason the feature was omitted from the current version of the game.

Also got Chessmaster, Magic: The Gathering Duels of the Planeswalkers, and fuck knows how many poker games for the PC and Xbox Live.

I play Go and the Yu-Gi-Oh! card game.

I've been playing Yu-Gi-Oh! for about seven years or so now. I used to collect the real life cards, and even managed to rope a couple of family members and friends into playing on occasion. Was quite expensive buying new packs and hoping to get some new cards in them, not to mention it was impossible to keep up with the rate they released new sets. So I turned to Gameboy Advance, PC, and later on DS versions of it, and settled for playing computer opponents.

I discovered Go when I started reading a manga called "Hikaru no Go" about five years ago and got really interested in the game. It's a 4,000 year-old game of strategy that originated in China but spread to the world from Japan. Way more complex than chess even though the basic rules are simpler. It's not about capturing your opponent, (though you can and sometimes must), it's about territory and points. There are professional players, televised matches (in Asia anyway) and Go associations all over the world. I bought some books on it and a small table board to learn on, but I'm still a rank beginner and have never played against a real person!

BUT! I recently found both of these on Xbox Live! I'm so happy to finally be able to play these on my Xbox! Yay!
Though I don't think anyone else on the site has them. Boo.
Still, the AI is pretty good, and I'm a bit shy when it comes to multi-player, so I'm content.
