    Default Good computer protection Programs?

So basically, after playing a good ol'tidy game of rift, i got off and was sent a link from a friend to computer forum i visit reguluary its hardforums anyway i went to get some drinks and came back to find i'd been ad bombed with alot of ads and something called CVD.Exe installed it self and cleared my programs reg and Control Panel Reg, I got rid of it to stop it from running but it had disabled all the program connections so when you click on a program it gives you a invalid process link then closes. So i had to format and reinstall, what a pain

Basically, I need a good Anti-Virus/Spyware that isn't free, I want something decent for it's price, I don't want Norton or Mcafee or Avg because so far their pretty horrible.

So if anyone knows a very good protection software please give me a buzz.

I am using Kaspersky Internet Security and I'm happy with it. The only thing that annoys me is that I have to manually set all the programs I need as trustful the first time I use them, because it sets everything on potentially dangerous.
It also has a good IM and Browser safety, checks all the files you get sent via IM and it can provide a "Safe Surf" mode were it actually runs your browser in a virtual environment. Plus stuff like Safe Booting and Virtual Keyboard. It was worth my money.

I've used Zone Alarm Pro for over ten years now and is the only software I've found that does everything I want along with the freedom to control it rather than it assuming anything on its own. I also have PrevX as a backup, which monitors all my internet activity and catches shit as soon as it happens. It's immediate too, like when I followed a link from Ed's Facebook feed to Cracked.com it warned me of two serious problems (one trojan and one backdoor) before the page had even started to load so I was able to kill my browser immediately and disinfect my machine before it took hold. Zone Alarm Pro does the same, as well as scheduled virus scanning, daily virus library updates, email checking for incoming and outgoing and has additional features like immediate shutdown of all internet activity using a single keypress.

Those are my recommendations based on what I need myself. My entire life revolves around being online and if anything happened to my data, then a lot of clients would be very unhappy.. and maybe a little lawsuit-happy, so I had to test as many as possible before deciding on what best suited me.

Sorry about that, I have no idea how that would have happened.

Wasn't you though, it was some shitty advertiser that clearly hadn't been screened and their coding had malware built in to it. Just means I don't go to cracked.com anymore though, as it shows they don't vet their advertisers for clean code. Idiots.

I use Avast. I don't know if it's the best, but seems to do the job!

I use AVG Internet security too, I know you said it looks horrible but I don't think it's too bad.

AVG is the best one I've ever used, and I went through most all of them. Don't use the free version, it's too basic. The paid version, AVG Internet Security rather than simply AVG Anti-virus, has a very good firewall, a more powerful and customisable anti-virus detecting toolset, does rootkits and spyware, registry error fixing, and has a very good anti-spam. It also installs a plugin to IE and Firefox to scan links in webpages and tell you if they're safe to click on, similar to Mark's Zone Alarm but without waiting for you to have already clicked on it. I've used it without incident for about four years now.
