Hello Games Has Last Laugh At DC2010

As an amusing sideswipe to the publishers who turned their nose up at Joe Danger – now a huge success on the PlayStation Network, developer Hello Games provided some some truly astounding and cringeworthy insight into how some publishers think.  Or don’t.

Sean Murray, one of Hello Games’ programmers took the stage during the Develop Conference to reveal a list of reasons why the game was turned down, with genuine quotes from meetings which included some of the following gems:

“Collecting giant coins feels unrealistic to me”

“I can see this working as a Facebook app”

“We want games that are less about fun right now”

“We love the theme, but with a different game”

“We believe the iPhone will be largely unsupported”

“Can Joe be a monkey? We like Monkeys”

“Name me one popular game with motorbikes?”

With Joe Danger going on to receive critical success, selling over 50,000 copies in its first week alone, Hello Games have had the last laugh.  Once we dried our tears of mirth here at GLHQ, we wondered how many publishers heard/read themselves being quoted and slithered down into their chairs.  Giant coins…who needs ‘em, certainly not popular Italian plumbers, or, for that matter, Hello Games now.

I have no idea how I managed to miss this news piece, but I’m just reading it for the first time right now. This is incredible, to think that the game was turned down for such ridiculous and bewildering reasons. I often wonder about these people who greenlight things, given the low quality of most movies and albums released today… it’s almost like they toss a coin or just use the “Approved” stamp to meet a quota on any old crap and the decent stuff is left to fester.

Well done to Hello Games for sticking to their guns though.

I know, funny stuff and totally ridiculous…it is as though they had never played any actual games…the giant coins one was the classic for me though :D
