Amnesia Sales Top 1.3 Million

It is always rewarding to see a small game from an indie developer suddenly take off and become a huge success, and Amnesia is one of those titles.  Having reviewed it way back in 2010, and predicting  that it could be an underground smash in the making, we’ve since watched it become a cult hit, spawning countless YouTube videos of shit-scared gamers screaming their guts out at the game’s shocks and heart-tearing atmosphere.

Developers Frictional Games have now revealed that is has sold close to 1.4 million units, many of which were from its successful inclusion in the Humble Indie Bundle and the Potato Sack.  Perhaps more surprising was the fact that Amnesia’s monthly full price sales come in at over 10,000 units – a great success for an indie title.  This means that Frictional are able to not only support themselves and finance their collaborative follow up to Amnesia – A Machine For Pigs – but to be able to take a chance and work on new, potentially riskier, projects, including an even more horrifying release:

“Our main concern is our new super secret project. We do not want to say much about this project yet, but we can disclose that it will be horror and that it will be first person. One of the things I was most disappointed with in Amnesia was that it never really managed to deliver any deeper themes, but was more like a shallow fright-fest. For the new project we want to change that and really try and bring a certain theme to the front. Our hope is that this will create a very special experience, creating horror in a much more disturbing way.”

If Amnesia was a “shallow fright-fest”, then we hate to think what they will have in store with this secret title; we still don’t game with the lights off, thanks to them.
