SpecialEffect Charity Launches Suite

SpecialEffect, the charity which is dedicated to helping young people with disabilities to enjoy games, has launched the world’s first ever fully accessible games suite at Helen and Douglas House Children’s Hospice in Oxfordshire.  The suite is funded by SpecialEffect, and was purpose built in order to allow the hospice’s guests to enjoy gaming during their stay, regardless of the severity of their disabilities.

SpecialEffect is a cause close to our heart here at GL, with one of our writers, Kat organising a 24 hour Halo Reach marathon to raise money for them after being moved by learning about the charity’s hard work when she met their representatives at Eurogamer this year.  SpecialEffect’s Director, Dr Mick Donegan had this to say on the grand opening of the suite:

“The games suite has been in development for over a year and a half, it’s great the suite is now open for guests at the hospice to enjoy. The new gaming suite contains a wide range of access technology, from eye-gaze devices to switches, to ensure that as many of the guests are catered for as possible.  SpecialEffect hope to continue to work with the hospice by including the suite in our road show project next year and continue to work with the staff and guests at the hospice to help find a way for everyone to play”
