Pirates OTC LEGO Game Announced

Any idle speculation as to the theme of the next Lego game has now (until the next time, at least) been laid to rest; Disney announced today that they are teaming up with TT Games to create Lego Pirates of the Caribbean.  Featuring roguish, swaggering drunkard, Cap’n Jack Sparrow, LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game will be developed by masters of the blocks, TT games and published by Disney Interactive studios on multiple platforms, including handhelds.

The game will feature storylines and characters from the first three films (much the same as the recent Lego Harry Potter release), along with the upcoming fourth film, ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’.  The game will be released alongside the new film which is expected to hit around  May 2011 and boasts over 70 playable characters, and the usual Lego humour, cut scenes, exploration and co-op which has made the previous games such a success.

Anyone who had money on the Bond or LOTR franchises making it to Lego will undoubtedly be disappointed, but given the quirkiness of the characters, stories, and the rich detail in the worlds and locations, we reckon this was a pretty good pick, albeit one that we had never actually considered when throwing around Lego game ‘what ifs’.  Still, console yourselves with the thought that you will be able to smash Orlando Bloom and the pointy woman to bits.  Repeatedly.  Besides, anything which has versions of – even if only in Lego form – Bill Nighy and Stellan Skarsgard in it gets instant snaps.

And we should have Lego Star Wars III in Feb 2011.

They need any of their usual lego humour as Pirates is already funny enough without it. I wouldn’t mind seeing a LOTR lego game but Bond? How would a bond lego game work? You do the events from 1 film then suddenly your some other bond guy doing the events from a completely different film? That’s gonna be a several disc game unless they have very good compression.

I said the same about Bond – there’s only one protagonist really, unless they bring Q and M in as characters… which really wouldn’t work. Lorna had suggested that you get to play as the different baddies but, even then, that’s ok for the amount of baddies available but you’d still really only have the one goody! I think LOTR would be good, am not really sold on PoTC but we’ll see what they come up with.
