EA Return Fire After Kotick Remarks

The bickering back and forth between Bobby Kotick and…well…everyone, continues as EA take their turn in responding to the Activision CEO’s recent remarks in an interview with Edge magazine this month. Kotick claimed that EA had been struggling for a long time and that “The most difficult challenge it faces today is great people don’t really want to work there. It’s like, if you have no other options you might consider them. Its stock options have no value, its lost its way.”
EA Corporate Communications VP, Jeff Brown responded in a statement to Gamasutra by saying “Kotick’s relationship with studio talent is well-documented in litigation.” He goes on to say:
“His company is based on three game franchises – one is a fantastic persistent world he had nothing to do with; one is in steep decline; and the third is in the process of being destroyed by Kotick’s own hubris.”
Meeouch, nice volley. It seems that the bitter rivalry between Activision and EA won’t be ending any time soon…especially not with Medal of Honor going head to head with Call Of Duty: Black Ops this Autumn anyway, let alone fired Infinity Ward duo, West and Zampella’s new studio, Respawn Entertainment slipping into bed with EA. To be honest, we’d be disappointed if this one didn’t trundle on, geeks need OTT drama somewhere, since we wouldn’t be seen dead watching Eastenders.

This is typical… all this kicks off again just as I run out of Butterkist. I may have to take back what I said yesterday about Kotick not being a gamer… if he perpetuates this then I’ll have to give him credit for taking part in pseudo-intellectual gameplay, even if it doesn’t require a power source and an HD TV.
Normally I’d just say to hell with it, both EA and Activision are equally evil and they can bicker about which is the bigger bunch of tossers all they like, but EA has actually improved in a lot of respects in the last two years or so. New IPs, acquiring Bioware, not screwing gamers as hard as they used to.
Well, except for that Cerberus Network thing on Mass Effect 2, they totally lied about that.
Considering Ubisoft have that DRM deal now on their PC games, and Square have been going down the pan since the merger with Enix, I’m hard pressed to name any major publisher I like more than I can complain about. Maybe Nintendo.
