Risen Sequel Announced – Piratey Goodness

Risen was one of the ‘tough crowd’ of RPGs, making the player struggle to survive and progress but ultimately presenting a rewarding game, albeit for PC gamers at least.  Publishers Deep Silver have just announced that a sequel is on the way, developed once again by Piranha Bytes.  Risen 2: Dark Waters is a third person RPG set a few years after the end of the first game and human kind have been forced to near extinction by titans who have devastated all before them.  If that wasn’t enough to put a crimp on your day, giant sea creatures have made shipping and therefore commerce and travel near impossible with their attacks.  Guess who’s going to have to sort it all out?  As a member of the ‘Inquisition’, it is up to you to find out just what the fuck is going on and bang some heads together to restore order to the world.  Good luck, because you’re likely going to need it.

The game promises a piratey/nautical type slant and, being set in the dark, gritty world of the first game, means that it will likely be one to watch out for if you are the type of RPG fan who turns their nose up at the more candy-floss or hand holding titles.  Risen did not take it easy on players and we’ve no doubt that the sequel will perpetuate this style.  The game will also feature a full day/night cycle, along with multiple player choices and world shaping decisions to allow for more immersion.

The screens are looking sexy, let’s just hope that the console version fares a little better than its predecessor this time around, though PC gamers can no doubt sit back smugly and enjoy the prettiness once more.

I have a feeling that this MAY be the follow up that I’d expected when I completed Risen. The game was left open and featured a cut-scene between our hero and Patty, the pirate captain’s daughter… so my guess is that Risen 2 is in some way tied in to Patty. Risen was an unexpected gem for me, and really picked up after the first chapter, but I DO hope that they pay a little more attention to the RPG genre this time around because the levelling in Risen itself was mediocre at best, where you’d earn “learning points” after levelling up and you still had to pay money to a trainer, as well as spend the learning points, to advance skills. It was a considerable let down to an otherwise great game…. and a very hard game to get started without being killed. A lot.

Either way though, I’m happy to hear that there’ll be a sequel!
