Halo Film or Halo TV Series?

The ‘will they, won’t they’ fog about Halo hitting the big screen seems to have become a little clearer thanks to a recent NYGameCritics interview with Halo franchise development director, Frank O’Connor.  According to O’Connor, there will be a Halo film, even if Microsoft have to fork out the cash themselves.  Over the years, a number of people including Peter Jackson have been attached to the project but nothing has ever come of it, despite Microsoft remaining keen – the licensing (all owned by MS) being perhaps a key issue for studios looking to make a quick quid beyond the film itself.

“It was the lawyers. When they went behind closed doors with the contracts, things fell apart.” O’Connor explained. “The problem was that the movie company couldn’t make any money beyond the movie.”

He goes on to say that Microsoft would support the director’s vision, allowing their unique style to shine though, and even citing Danny Boyle as an example.  Though obviously there is big money to be made from the silver screen, O’Connor made some interesting remarks regarding television.

“We’d love to see Halo as a television series. Look what HBO did with Band of Brothers or even Rome. Something like that would work because the Halo universe is so vast.”

With the full weight and even financial backing of Microsoft behind it, sooner or later this one will fly, however, here at GLHQ, we can’t help getting more excited by the idea of a gritty TV series than a nintey minute blastathon.  It would give a greater chance for long running plot arcs and character development and would arguably be the marathon runner to the movie’s sprinter. We shall see.

A TV series would definately be the better option. A film would just be non stop action/fighting, you can get that in the games. I want more of a story line, fleshed out characters and maybe something from the Covenant perspective?!
